On May 24, 2012, Chenega Corporation’s Military, Intelligence and Operations Support SBU held its 6th Annual Chenega Invitational at Old Hickory Golf Club in Woodbridge, Va., benefitting the Azalea Charities’ Aid for Wounded Warriors project.  With 156 participants and 39 teams, the event proved to be a great success, raising more than $46,000 through registration fees, raffle ticket sales, donations, sponsorships and a competitive silent auction.

Chenega is incredibly grateful to all of the sponsors and contributors who made this event possible. Some of the donated items included a guitar signed by the remaining soldiers in Kuwait before their departure; concert tickets; golf club sets; and professional athletic tickets. Raffle prizes were also donated in the form of gift certificates, golf products, and special passes for a fun day of golf.

The growth of this tournament over the years has been overwhelming. In 2008, the Chenega Invitational hosted 80 players, raising $17,000, and has continued to grow exponentially throughout the years, with $46,000 raised in 2011. The money collected this year will go towards the Aid for Wounded Warriors project, which aims to lift the spirits and enhance the morale of military men and women who have been injured in the line of duty. Part of the proceeds will also go to the Thomas Jerome House in Trenton, New Jersey.  The home will serve TBI and PTSD patients.

This year’s special guest speaker, Josh Himan, was left paralyzed from the chest down when his Humvee hit an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in September 2009.  In January 2011 a commitment by Azalea Charities, Quality of Life Foundation and Fuller Center for Housing was made to build an addition on to Josh's home in Dale City, VA.  The project included a first-floor bedroom with sufficient space to maneuver, an accessible bathroom and kitchen, wider doorways and hallways, a wider driveway and a ramp into the home.  If you would like to help support Azalea Charities, please visit www.azaleacharities.org.

Chenega Corporation continues to support the community through charitable events and looks forward to the 7th Annual Chenega Invitational in 2012. If you are interested in participating in this yearly event, please contact the coordinator, Helen Hilios at Helen.Hilios@chenega.com.
